Fairwinds believe that our pets are family and we grieve for them as much as any other family member. A funeral service or final visitation has been a tradition to help the ones left behind say their goodbyes. They are our constant companion and source of unconditional acceptance and love.  At the vet, often things go very quickly, and in the grief and confusion of the moment, you are not able to say the the things you would like to or just pet them for one last time.  At Fairwinds, a private goodbye, in a loving and unhurried environment, is a way to give this to you and your loved one.  I have found that being able to pet and talk to them one more time in your own way and time, is very healing.

At the visitation or funeral, family members are encouraged to bring the other pet members of the family. Many choose to bring flowers, cards, favorite toys, or blanket to leave with their loved one. Children can learn how a pet should be loved and cherished in life and respected in death. Children are encouraged  to write a card or letter to their pet and put them in a memory box or with their pet. Photos are often taken during the service if the family wishes.

A pet funeral or final visitation can be a quiet occasion or a party; balloons, wine and music for a celebration of the life of the pet are now very accepted.

There is no right or wrong way to say a farewell to your best friend. Our funeral for family and friends include services by a member of the clergy; our visitation is with family and friends. We want to make sure you have the opportunity to experience the ceremony that means the most to you. Let us help you plan the service you want.

I  use the services of Paula Webb, founder of the National Interfaith Council. She is a non-denominational  ordained minister who has studied Pet Ministry. She offers support, love and a service tailored to your pet .  Her services are unique to your loved one and the love you share.Typically, she will call you several days before the service to learn more about your family and lost loved one, to gather information for the service requested. Paula is very comforting, and offers you her advice, council and care.
